Mariola Wnuk – Not clear the aftermath of the election in South Ossetia. In the region contestated before by Georgia and by the Russian Federation, in November this year a presidential election was held with eleven candidates running. With 57 of the votes in the second round , the victory went to Alla Dzhioyeva, a pro Russian candidates, not supported, however, by Moscow that embraced another canditade, Anatoly Bibilov, minister for emergencies. Although both Alla Dzhioyeva and Anatoly Bibilov were pro-Russian, only Bibilov supported the idea of rejoining South Ossetia to the Russian Federation. The results of the elections were, however, annuled subsequently by South Ossetia’s Supreme Courts on the grounds of vote intimidation, causing a wave of protests among civilians. As the result, Alla Dzhioyeva did not recognize the Court’s decision and declared to form her own, independent administration. In order to ease the atmosphere, the president of South Ossetia made an agreement with the opposition and promised to step down. Moreover, Alla Dzhioyeva, contrary to the Court’s decision, was allowed to run for president in the election next year.
The whole election was not recognized by USA, NATO and European Union. The independence of South Ossetia is recognized just by five countries such as Russia, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
