Tent protest in Tel Aviv – Il punto di vista di un giovane israeliano

DAGAN WALD – Tel AvivIt’s all began three months, ago. Daphni Leef, a young 25 year old video editor, from Tel Aviv, have been notify she is evicted from her apartment. Due to the fact, of the high rate of rent in the city, Daphni was desperate enough from the situation, and she decided to express her feelings, and emotions, through on an event on Facebook. On the event, she is announcing she will establish a tent on Habima Square (a prestige square where located the national theatre of Israel and He-ichal Hatarbut, a concert hall), and will protest on the high rate of the rent, in Tel Aviv.Eventually, she didn’t had the permits, to build the tent in Habima, so She Establish it on Rotchild Blvd. The event, got attention from many citizens in Tel Aviv, who can’t pay the rent, and decided like Leef, to build a tent on the blvd. Rotchild Blvd, is known in Israel (and in the middle east) as one of the most luxurious streets, where apartment’s value can go up to prices, of more that a million euro. In the boulevard since Tel Aviv, was ‘born in 1909, they have been many events and happenings, which brought many Israelis from all around the country (two weeks, before the tent event, the boulevard was packed by thousands of Israelis, of the event of The White Night). As in these moments, many buildings in the area are being re-build, because of special projects being bought by Jewish millionaires from around the world.

During the first weekend, of July 14th many citizens came to support and placed their tents in the boulevard,( even yours truly, across the synagogue where I did my bar mitzvah),and within weeks, the whole boulevard was covered by tents, and all around tel aviv, in Boulevard such
as Ben Gurion and Nordo, and also around Israel, in cities such as Be’er Sheva, Jerusalem, Haifa, Kfar Saba, Rishon Le Zion, and many more.

But eventually it’s not only because of the high rent, Israelis are paying, it’s the basic lifestyle every Israeli needs. Before the tent Protest, a facebook event was protesting on the high price, of Cottage Cheese, a necessary product, and demand citizens will boycott cottage, till it’s price will be lower. The effect succeeds immediately, and during these days, Tnuva, a Dairy and Milk Company, is being received boycotting due to the demands  (of basically students) that the price on their products will go down.  Soon the protest got received more power, because of other social problems which included the low salary which receiving doctors, nurses, and medicine people, social workers, journalists, artists, teachers,
policemen, firemen (which their crisis was discovered, due to the lack of firemen, and their budget and old devices after a massive fire, in the Carmel forests during the latest winter, which forty four people got burned).  But the problem is much wider, because it’s not only an economic issue,  but more a political issue: following the right wing governments of the recent years of Ariel Sharon, Ehud Olmert and Benjamin Netanyahu, and their finance Ministers (which included Netanyahu himself, and the current minister Yuval Shteninz) .

Several business which belong to the Israel have been sold, in cheap prices, to private business men (centrally the Offer Family) and within that, Israel’s budget I going due to paganism Jews, such as orthodox and settlers, which are receiving budget of security and budget, without giving the country back, except the showing of the Jewish identity. Not only that- the status of the poverty Graff in Israel is mainly a big lie, because the finance speakers are declaring that the unemployed rate have been lower, but on the other hand, the workers receive very low salaries, very near to a poverty level, and very problematic level of more than half of million children (most of them from the regions of Arab and orthodox families, where they multiple children) gives a disturbing perspective, of at least six million citizens, of the population which included – 6.5 million.

Special tents around Tel Aviv, have been build: in Levinsky Garden, where locate many work refugees, from the areas of Africa, south east Asia, and eastern Europe, and many other people who come to support them and their children which received constant threat for being throwing from Israel . Also In Jaffa, the tent protest have been bulled due to citizens ( basically from the Arab people) who have been expelled, due to real estate  agencies, which paid the poor tenants, cheap money for being evicted against their will, and also same problems happen in Kfar Shalem, the Tikva Neighbour hood, and Jessi Cohen Neighborhood in Holon.

The protest received many backup of Israel’s most important entertainers, musicians, authors. From the first demonstration in Tel Aviv, which
accrued on 23rd of July, which came 20,000 Israelis, and the one after it and after it, came hundreds of thousands of many Israelis, in and outside in Tel Aviv, which the basic center of protests, in Haifa, Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva. Even when several citizens were killed by gunshots in Eilat and attached with it several security events, as bomb drops from Gaza, the demonstration didn’t held it’s breath and thousands of Israelis demonstrate in peacefully and quiet. And In every protest, the citizens of Israel demanded this title –”Israel Demands Social Justice”.

The demands of the protest are including A new taxation system would be implemented (which would include lower indirect taxes and higher direct taxes, Free schooling from an early age, Privatization of state-owned enterprises would end, rent control, More resources would be invested on public housing and public transportation.

During august, many people have left their tents, and left them symbolically on the boulevard, due to heat of august, but the spirit still goes on. Meanwhile their have been several attempts to take control on empty buildings in Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem and resorting with people and. In the recent Wednesday, a building with the “authorization”, of very known businessmen in Rotchild Blvd. have being took control as the main building of the protest, where the future actions of the activist will take place and decide about their plans.

After the big demonstration of September 3rd, under the title “One Million People” it have been decided, about an initiations removing of the tents around Israel, although certain people who don’t have a housing solution are refusing to remove their tents, due to the following winter, and probably if security problems, because of the declaration of the Palestine state, at the UN on September 23rd. At the same time, the Mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, have been removing the tents, where he breaks orders of the court, and illegal evictions of the tents, alongside throwing to the trash, including personal belongings of the residents. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Netanyahu appointed a committee to pinpoint and propose solutions to Israel’s socioeconomic problems. The committee’s task was to hold discussions with “different groups and sectors within the public”, and subsequently make proposals to the government’s socioeconomic cabinet, headed by Finance Minister Steinitz. Professor Manuel Trajtenberg, chairman of the Planning and Budgeting Committee of the Council for Higher Education, former head of the National Economic Council, and the former Chief Economic Adviser to the Prime Minister, was appointed to head the committee. The committee consists of 14 members, 10 of whom are government or public officials.

So far, from myself, a young 27 year old guy from Tel Aviv, I have removed my tent last week, due to the initiation. But i believe the struggles have never been ended. I work in several jobs, as a dj, a journalist and a writer, and still I can’t pay my own rent. Because of it, I have decided to move back to my parents, as many citizens, did it, and had to return home due to the high rent, including young parents and their newly babies.
Every year, dozens of Israelis are leaving Israel because of this problem, even though they love this state, but for people who want to work on science, education, art, psychology, and other academic views, it’s their only choice. Prime Minister, Benjiamin Netanyahu, is a devoted supporter of the Capitalism economic system. He supports tycoons, and expanding the gap between the rich and the poor. Daphnee Leef, have opened a huge Pandora box, about the situation of  Israelis, one after another, and every box after another one.

The neglecting of the social subjects, for the favor of the security and religious subjects, have showed a very sick state which prefer to be more Jewish than humanitarian, even to it’s own people .
